HISTORY

The story of Nikolaj sounds like a fairytale when spun by the media. Only son of a formerly aristocratic, Danish family rises to stardom in the Danish ballet world and is invited to guest at American Ballet Theatre at the tender age of 23 where he wows the audiences on stage and at one of the afterparties meets Hollywood Starlet, the two of them falling in love which makes him enthusiastically accept the company's offer of a principal position, so they can be together, get married, have a child. Yes, it sounds really romantic, doesn't it?

Would've been nice.

What really happened, though, was this: Nikolaj was born to a formerly aristocratic family in Northern Zealand, only son of former principal ballerina, Maiken Hermansen (now Buch-Asmussen) and her retail empire owning husband, Bo. His mother began nursing aspirations for his career at an early age, enrolling him in ballet school at age 6. He swept through training and was immediately recognised as a huge prodigy with the perfect technique, perfect expression and perfect proportions. A prince of dance, if you asked his schoolmates. Said both admiringly and enviously.

He landed his first lead role as an apprentice with the Royal Danish Ballet, barely 18 years old and when the new ballet master, Andreas Sommer, took over leadership of the company, Nikolaj went from one lead to another constantly, until he was finally made a principal dancer at only 21 years old, the youngest principal promotion in the company's history.

Andreas, although it caused him quite a lot of trouble with the other dancers, favored Nikolaj quite blatantly and supported him in everything, sending him on guest appearances at other companies, international competitions and so on. During these initial years, an attraction grew between them, although Andreas was twice Nikolaj's age and they initiated a relationship after Nikolaj's principal promotion, something they had to keep secret, seeing as Andreas was at the time married to another man and furthermore, any relations between them beyond the professional could bring Andreas in serious trouble, not only with the dancers, but publicly as well.

It was a tumultuous, turbulent relationship. Not only because the other dancers suspected, but because they were both very dramatic, driven people. On-again, off-again they spent almost three years in a romantic entanglement that almost choked them to death with its lies and its secrecy. Nikolaj dated girls on the side to maintain his heterosexual image, while Andreas kept trying to save a marriage that was beginning to sink quickly. Perhaps from the beginning it was doomed to fail.

At 23, Nikolaj was invited to the major American Ballet Theatre to dance the role of Romeo in their production of Romeo and Juliet. While in New York, he met the slightly older Juliet Morin, a rising Hollywood actress, and the two felt an immediate connection, becoming fast friends. He eventually confessed to his relationship with his ballet master to her and she supported him in his decision to break up with Andreas, though he only did it once American Ballet Theatre offered him a principal position with them and thus, left him an opening through which to flee Denmark and the Danish ballet world that had become toxic and much too intimate for him. One year later, he was out. Moved to New York, into an apartment secured him by Juliet and his new life could begin.

It wasn't an easy break. Neither from Andreas, nor from his home country. Eventually, however, he found his footing at American Ballet Theatre and began a glorious career mostly free of injury and full of big, exciting opportunities. Nikolaj still rode the heterosexual image outwardly and Juliet agreed to accompany him to functions and parties as his girlfriend, though they weren't actually romantically involved. Like him, she needed a way to keep the media out of her private life and dating Nikolaj satisfied most people. As the months went on this way, the arrangement working very well, he decided to ask her to marry him. He wanted to marry his best friend and Juliet was it. She agreed. It was a dream wedding. Within two years they decided to have a child and raise a family together, too. Frida came along and Nikolaj actually felt his life finally made a bit of sense.

Even if he'd had to give up the love of his life.

Andreas, meanwhile, back in Copenhagen, had got divorced from his husband and after a couple of crises and scandals in the Royal Danish Ballet, resigned as ballet master to pursue a director's position at one of the major American companies. Once more on the same continent as Nikolaj, perhaps inevitably, frequenting the same circles, one day they'd run into each other again.

PERSONALITY

Serious, this applies both to Nikolaj's mood as a general rule and his attitude towards life. He can seem a little unfriendly or unrelenting to strangers, but it's really mostly due to how he as a person is focused on doing his utmost in all things.

Hardworking, as such he has an incredible work ethic that he uses to perform his very best on stage or, if he fails, to correct his next performance until it's where he wants it to be. He's strenuous and never quits. In his private life, his hardworking attitude comes into play in regards to being there for his wife in her work, flying out late to premieres or attend her screenings, despite his own work schedule.

Intense, both his seriousness and his work ethics can make Nikolaj come off very intense around others and it's one of the things that makes him attractive both to the press, the audience, the opposite and the same sex as well as the large circle of friends it's earned him. He's a charismatic person and his surroundings generally respond well to that.

Dedicated, in his private life, his morals take the shape of work ethics that are almost unimaginable to ordinary people, but in his private life, it manifests as a dedication towards his wife and child that can't be compared to anything else. He breathes his family, they're his sanctuary and his strength in everything. They're what keeps him going and he'd do anything for them.

Passionate, he lives and breathes his work and puts everything he is into every role he performs, becoming especially known for his solid and highly convincing character work that paired with his technique elevated most ballets he's in. He also has other interests that he's passionate about, like playing the violin and attending concerts of all kinds. He loves music.

Genuine, Nikolaj is all in all the what you see if what you get type. Besides the specific mechanisms of his marriage and behind them, his sexuality, he is rarely dishonest and doesn't try to hide who he considers himself to be. He doesn't do anything by halves and truly believes he's chosen the thing that he wants the most and which will make him most happy. He tries to be as down to earth as possible in his dramatic line of work.
